Description:
[Echoes of the Pyrenees: A Musical Journey Through Catalonia Woven by Three Composers] The theme of this album by Willem Latchumia, who is highly acclaimed for his interpretations of contemporary music, is a musical journey through France and Spain (the region of Catalonia), separated by the Pyrenees. Inspired by philosopher Vladimir Jankélévitch’s essay *The Distant Presence*, the program features a unique narrative structure, alternating works by three composers—Mompou, Sevrak, and Albéniz—who were closely connected in the early 20th century. In each piece, elements of traditional folk music are sublimated through the composers’ respective styles, and scenes from daily life—such as children’s games, village festivals, church bells, as well as the breath of nature. Ratchumia, who has a deep understanding of contemporary music and folklore, pursues the piano’s tonal colors and spatial depth, recreating a sound that is both serene and three-dimensional. The album also includes Albéniz’s “Navarre,” completed by Sevrak, making it a rich collection that shines with an approach demonstrating the historical and geographical connections among the three artists. “Sound waves circulate through space. What is born there is that elusive, changeable, uncertain, yet captivating magic called music,” Vladimir Jankélévitch once said. In his essay *Distant Presence*, he compared and analyzed the works of Isaac Albéniz, Déodat de Sévrac, and Federico Mompou, delving deeply into the fluidity of musical sound. Each of these three composers was able to express the inexpressible and transform reality through their unique harmonies, colors, and resonances. Inspired by the poetic landscapes they depicted, Willem Latchumia embarks on a captivating and moving sonic journey through France and Spain on this album. —From the booklet Naxos Japan
