Description:

[The Legacy of Key Patrons Who Supported Composers of the Mid- to Late Baroque Period] This program offers an overview of the musical journey of Christina, the former Queen of Sweden and a Roman noblewoman in exile, who is renowned as a patron of Corelli and A. Scarlatti. Concerto Copenhagen, one of Scandinavia’s leading early music ensembles—highly acclaimed for its performances of 18th-century music from Bach through the Classical period as well as Romantic works—once again impresses listeners with its mastery of the authentic expressive language of the Baroque through this album. Christina Vasa (1626–1689), daughter of King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden—who distinguished himself during the Thirty Years’ War—inherited the Swedish throne at the age of five following her father’s death and was crowned in 1650; however, disliking her restrictive position, in 1654, she abdicated the throne in favor of her cousin, Charles Gustav, and fled the country. After converting to Catholicism, she set out for Italy and settled in Rome, the capital of the arts. Having already demonstrated an aptitude for music in her homeland—as evidenced by her selection of the German prodigy Andreas Düben—she interacted with outstanding musicians in Rome and was among the first to recognize and patronize the geniuses of the next generation, such as Corelli and A. Scarlatti. This album traces Christina’s career back to her time in Sweden, featuring a well-balanced selection of rare works that convey the musical landscape of the North Sea region alongside famous pieces by Corelli, Stradella, and others. The program also weaves in chamber music for small ensembles and string orchestra arrangements of Gesualdo’s madrigals—which she is said to have loved—conveying her profound musical insight through meticulous performances brimming with dynamic contrasts.
