Description:

[Lazarevich’s Celtic Music, Which Dazzled Audiences at LFJ2026, Returns with a New Album Featuring Standley on Vocals] Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien, led by François Lazarević, thrilled audiences with their beautiful and dynamic Celtic music at La Folle Journée TOKYO 2026 and its related performances. On this long-awaited album, they are joined by Rosemary Standley, vocalist for “Moriarty”—a band active primarily in France that performs pop songs from the 1930s to the 1950s—charting a course that extends all the way to American folk songs. At the core of the album are traditional ballads (narrative folk songs) from England, Scotland, and Ireland, collected in the late 19th century by Francis Child, Cecil Sharp, and others. These songs later formed the roots of American folk music, and the album also draws inspiration from interpretations by artists such as Simon & Garfunkel during the 1960s folk revival. The accompaniment features period instruments such as the Baroque harp, viola da gamba, pandora, bowlan (a frame drum found in Scotland and elsewhere), various historical flutes, and small bagpipes. While the harmony between the original melodies and the timbre of the period instruments is generally prioritized, for certain songs, such as “Scarborough Fair” and “The Last Rose of Summer (Garden Wildflowers),” 1970s-style arrangements incorporating jazz harmonies—based on arrangements by French saxophonist Vincent Le Quant—are employed, resulting in a natural blending of musical techniques from multiple eras. By combining Standley’s vocal style—which blends folk and classical techniques—with Lazarević’s instrumental performances, grounded in historical research, the album objectively and systematically reconstructs the structure of these songs passed down through oral tradition, resulting in beautiful music that feels anything but dated.
