[A Collection of String Music Rich in the Subtleties Unique to German Baroque] A collection of mid- to late-German Baroque chamber music works centered around Baroque violinist Louise Aerton, who has performed with France’s leading early music ensembles, including Le Poème Harmonique, Ensemble Correspondances, Clematis, and Les Zépopé. In the German-speaking world, following the Thirty Years’ War—which lasted until the mid-17th century—a unique style of violin music emerged, drawing inspiration from the solo violin music developed in Italy during the first half of that century and making effective use of alternative tunings. In this process, the viola da gamba—which had been in use since the beginning of the century—was also effectively employed to enrich the lower-midrange of ensemble performances, and numerous works remain in which both the violin and the gamba are treated as leading instruments. With this background in mind, the viola da gamba—designed for the alto and tenor registers—makes its presence felt throughout this album. Beginning with the works of Capricornus—who, from an early stage at the Viennese court, strove to absorb and assimilate Italian-style violin music, thereby forging his own distinctive style—the selection of composers is exquisite, featuring Schmelzer, who was also active at the Viennese court, Biber of Salzburg, the master craftsman Krieger of Nuremberg, and Westhoff and Filsmaier—who composed unaccompanied pieces even before Bach—the selection of composers is exquisite. Hugues Desha, the renowned engineer who has recorded countless masterpieces for the ALPHA label, vividly captures the artistry of this performance—where the subtleties of improvisational ornamentation shine through, and the musicians’ strong individual presence is showcased within a cohesive ensemble.
