Description:

[The Subtleties of Gut Strings in the “Final Chapter,” Coming 20 Years After ALPHA’s Early Masterpiece] A collection of works by Christopher Simpson, who composed numerous instrumental pieces in the late 17th century in England—a period that saw the restoration of the monarchy following the Puritan Revolution and the subsequent republican era—carrying on the tradition of the viol (viola da gamba) consort that had existed since the Renaissance. The early ALPHA masterpiece *From Winter to Spring* (ALPHA088/out of print) by gamba player Sophie Watillon serves as the “Volume 1” of this collection, and the recording of “Volume 2”—which remained unfulfilled due to Watillon’s untimely death—has now been realized more than 20 years later. The project was conceived by the renowned French virtuoso Lucile Boulanger, who grew up familiar with the viola da gamba from a young age and regarded Watieau as her role model. Joining her are Miriam Rignol, another virtuoso at the forefront of 21st-century performance, and Manon Boulanger—whose father is a world-renowned early music performer—have come together to present the entire second half of Simpson’s suite collection *The Four Seasons* and *The Twelve Months* (a collection of 12 ensemble pieces), as well as divisions (variations) and dance pieces that showcase the variation techniques that established Simpson’s reputation. Veteran continuo player Elisabeth Geiger performs not only on the harpsichord but also on a 17th-century Museler-type virginal—a keyboard instrument featuring both a main keyboard and a smaller keyboard—as well as a 17th-century English-style chamber organ, of which few surviving examples remain. She beautifully frames the intimate and subtle interplay of the gut strings. Renowned engineer Aline Blondio, who also handled the recording for the “Volume 1,” conveys the subtle nuances of each performer’s vivid playing through her exquisite engineering. Naxos Japan
