Description:

[Enjoy “Leningrad” by Payare and the San Diego Symphony in a superb recording] Rafael Payare, a graduate of El Sistema, honed his craft as an assistant to Abbado, Dudamel, and Barenboim. His performance of Shostakovich with the San Diego Symphony, where he has served as music director since 2019, received high praise for Symphony No. 11, “1905,” released exclusively in digital format in 2022. Furthermore, in early 2020—just before concerts were universally canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic—he made his first visit to Japan to appear at a NHK Symphony Orchestra subscription concert, where he also presented an all-Shostakovich program. Now, having formed a new partnership with the Delos label, the first release in this collaboration—Symphony No. 7, “Leningrad”—is a monumental work of historical significance, composed by Shostakovich in 1941 during World War II, in the midst of the brutal Siege of Leningrad. This is a dynamic and exhilarating performance that showcases Payare’s assured leadership—he has significantly evolved the orchestra’s ensemble and forged a unique sound since taking the helm as music director. The brass section—which requires nearly two full sets of instruments—features, among others, Paul Merker, principal trumpet of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (where Payare also serves as music director), delivering a powerful performance. This is the first recording made at the Jacobs Music Center, which recently underwent extensive renovations that significantly improved its acoustics. The recording producer is Sean Murphy, highly acclaimed for his work on recordings of John Williams’ compositions, including *Star Wars*. The orchestra’s cohesive expressiveness is meticulously captured within the rich and dynamic acoustics of the renovated hall. This is a high-quality live recording that showcases the orchestra’s prowess as it embarks on a new artistic chapter. Naxos Japan
