Eugène d’Albert, a pianist and composer who was hailed by Franz Liszt as the “Great Albert” and was active in the music world from the late 19th century through the first half of the 20th century. This is the first volume of his piano works, brimming with romance and color—symbolized by his masterpiece, the opera *Les Basses*—and reflecting his tumultuous marriage to Teresa Carreño. Featuring the world premiere recording of the “Impromptu”—with its flowing, beautiful melodies—which had lain dormant in the “Brahms House” in Baden-Baden for over 100 years before being revived, as well as works from his youth, including the solemn “Suite,” imbued with a reverence for the Baroque style; the delicate and ephemeral miniatures “Album Pages,” delicate and ephemeral miniatures, and the “Four Piano Pieces”—which include elegant waltzes and ballads featuring brilliant virtuosity reminiscent of his teacher, Liszt—this program offers a comprehensive overview of his diverse expressive range. The performer is Sofia Gyuribadamova, who is highly regarded for her interpretations of Ernst von Dohnányi’s piano works. Having been personally involved in the rediscovery of these works, she has taken the bold approach of performing on an 1898 Steinway—once owned by Dalbér himself and restored to its original condition—to bring the true value of these works to life for a modern audience.
