Description:
[The third volume in a series of wind ensemble works performed by a group of Telemann specialists!] This is the third volume of recordings of overtures (wind suites) by the “Orfeo Wind Ensemble,” formed by wind players from the Austrian period instrument orchestra Orfeo Baroque Orchestra, which has recorded numerous works by Telemann. Although Telemann composed numerous French-style overtures (suites) for orchestra, he also left behind works for wind ensemble without string accompaniment. The suites and overtures are scored for multiple oboes, corno da caccia, and basso continuo. Suite TWV:44:13, which opens with a march, is notable for the elegance of its two arias. Suite TWV:44:7 demands more advanced technique; its overture, lasting about seven minutes, is rich in variety, and the subsequent rondo, sarabande, minuet, and bourrée each make full use of the characteristics of their respective dance forms. The Overture TWV:44:12, while more conservatively structured compared to the two works mentioned above, is characterized by the rhythm of its minuet. The march that opens the album was intended for performance by a military band; it is a short yet festive work consisting of six parts. An autograph score from his Frankfurt period survives for this march, and it is believed to have been composed for a shooting competition held as part of the celebrations marking the birth of Leopold, the heir born to Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI and Elizabeth. The two trio sonatas for wind instruments were intended for chamber performance. Each movement bears a French title, and while they display French characteristics such as graceful melodies and intimate dialogue, they also incorporate features of Italian music, such as a four-movement form reminiscent of church sonatas and a concerto-style slow movement featuring dissonances. This delicate yet robust texture, which blends musical characteristics from various countries, is unique to Telemann. The minuet TWV:40:110, inserted between the two trio sonatas, is a piece for two horns and is included in the collection *Der treue Musikmeister*. The Orfeo Baroque Orchestra, one of the leading ensembles in contemporary early music performance, continues to release a large number of invaluable recordings of Telemann’s works, setting a standard that others cannot match. For wind-instrument-focused recordings such as this one, the ensemble is known as the Orfeo Wind Ensemble, with the orchestra’s principal oboist, Karin van Heerden, serving as music director. Makiko Kurabayashi, one of the ensemble’s core members, plays the bassoon, while Emiko Uchiyama—a marimba player active primarily in Austria and a member of the “Wave Quartet,” a marimba quartet that is a rarity on the world stage—contributes on percussion.
