[Anton Reicha’s Symphonies: Revived After a Long Absence] Reicha, who was the same age as Beethoven, was also his colleague in the Bonn court orchestra from 1785 to 1789. Although he is primarily known today for his woodwind quintets and string quartets, cpo is launching a complete recording of his symphonies that incorporates the latest research findings. Many of Reich’s early orchestral works were not recognized as valuable when his estate was settled after his death, and thus missed their chance at publication. Ahead of the 250th anniversary of his birth in 2020, a comprehensive survey and study of scores and materials that had been lying dormant in a Paris library has begun, and work is progressing on dating unpublished works and restoring the scores. The Symphony No. 1 included here was composed during his Bonn period; the third movement frequently features irregular phrases in units of three or five measures, while the final movement employs a magnificent fugato. Furthermore, the Overture in D major—which he revised repeatedly throughout his life—employs a 5/8 time signature, rare for its time, to convey dramatic emotional expression.
