Echo du Danube Ensemble

Description:

[A Great Pioneer of the Purse: A Collection of String Ensemble Suites by the 17th-Century English Composer John Hingston] Born in York between 1599 and 1606, John Hingston received his musical education at York Minster, where his father served as choirmaster. His exceptional organ playing caught the attention of Francis Clifford, 4th Earl of Cumberland, and he became a member of the earl’s orchestra. During this time, from 1621 to 1623, he was sent to London to study music under the court organist Orlando Gibbons. He served until 1643, when his patron died and the House of Cumberland was abolished; however, following the Puritan Revolution and the Restoration, he secured a position at the English court, which he held until his death. He remained a lifelong bachelor, devoting himself entirely to music, and is credited with working tirelessly to elevate the status of British musicians and advance the music world. He was also an outstanding educator; John Blow and Henry Purcell were among his students in his later years. Most of Hingston’s surviving works are contained in seven volumes of part scores left behind in Oxford, the majority of which are ensemble pieces featuring various combinations of instruments. His compositions typically follow a structure in which a “fantazia” in free form is followed by stylized dance pieces, and Hingston’s originality is particularly evident in the fantazia sections. It has been noted that the “Fantasia Collection” for viola da gamba ensemble by the young Purcell shows a strong influence from Hingston’s music. In this recording, the performance centers on viols (viola da gamba) of various ranges—which were the mainstream of chamber music in England at the time—with the addition of violin and organ. The deep resonance of the suites for three bass viols (Tracks 9–11), an instrumentation that was rare even for its time, is truly unique. The name of the early music ensemble, Echoes of the Danube, is taken from the collection *Echoes of the Danube* by Johann Schenk, a German viola da gamba virtuoso active in the Netherlands in the late 17th century. Founder Christian Zinke studied under Jaap ter Linden, Rainer Zipperling, and Philippe Pierlo. The ensemble has participated in music festivals throughout Europe and has received high acclaim for its numerous recordings on labels such as cpo, NAXOS, and ACCENT. Please take note of this recording by Echo du Danube, which brings the talent of Hingston—an important composer who has long been overlooked—to the attention of today’s audience.
