Michael Collins, one of the world’s leading clarinetists—not just in the UK—has re-recorded Brahms’s Quintet and made his first recording of the masterpiece by Reger. While Collins boasts an extensive repertoire, he has repeatedly returned to classical masterpieces to deepen his interpretations. This is a re-recording of Brahms’s Quintet, following his 2013 recording with the Brodsky Quartet. Since Collins has included this piece in his 2025 concert tour in Japan, it is likely that he intended to capture an even more refined interpretation on this recording. While Mozart and Brahms enjoy outstanding popularity in the history of clarinet quintets, many clarinetists rank Reger’s quintet among their top three favorites, just behind those two composers. Written in the same A major key as Mozart’s, this piece stands out among Reger’s works—which are often associated with dense harmonies and complex counterpoint—as approachable music that is both sunny and lighthearted, yet also imbued with a touch of melancholy lyricism.
