Description:
Volume 36 of the SOMM label’s acclaimed “Beacham Collection” series. Although Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 3—the main work on this album—was not as highly regarded or frequently performed at the time as his later symphonies (No. 4 and beyond), Beecham seemed to have a particular affinity for it, recording it as early as 1947, just one year after founding the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The 1959 live recording featured here follows an interpretation nearly identical to that of the 1947 recording, though the final movement is nearly 40 seconds shorter in duration; the intensity of the performance, particularly in the latter half of the movement, conveys the heightened excitement characteristic of a live performance. The audience responds with thunderous applause even before the final note has faded. The recording, which features the timpani slightly more prominently, is particularly effective for this piece. The opening Delius piece is a recording of Beecham’s final London concert. The music is vibrant, showing not the slightest sign of decline, and the sound quality is the best on this album. The Grieg piece is refreshing and joyful, and while a concert suite of “The Witch Boy” by the Spanish composer Salcedo (also spelled Salcedo) was later published, this performance is reportedly an excerpt from the ballet score.
