Born in Helsinki in 1997, Jonathan Roseman began his international career after placing sixth in the Tchaikovsky Competition at the age of 18, and he performs regularly in Japan as well. This album features contemporary works from his native Finland, and it is noteworthy that it comprises new pieces composed since 2011. Pianist Johannes Pilt studied piano, composition, and conducting under Jorma Panula at the Sibelius Academy. Since 2024, he has been active as a pianist with Klangforum Wien and is particularly highly regarded for his performances of contemporary works. Zinoviev’s “Sustained” was commissioned by Roseman. While retaining echoes of beautiful Romantic music, the interweaving of dissonance creates a mysterious world. The centerpiece of the album is the cello sonata, completed by Aho in 2019, with a playing time of approximately 30 minutes. Composed of four movements with striking contrasts in tempo, it concludes by fading away into silence. Damström’s “Aveo”—a title that means both “farewell” and “yearning” in Latin—was written for those suffering from long COVID. It is said to embody the suffering of people cut off from peaceful, healthy lives, as well as their yearning for treatment and recovery. It was commissioned by the CelloFest music festival and premiered by Roseman. Fagerlund’s “Recitativo,” commissioned by the Porvoo Cello Competition, demands high technical skill and interpretive ability from the performer. Tarkkainen’s work features a four-note motif—the same as that in Sibelius’s Symphony No. 4—which appears throughout, with the piece unfolding through alternating slow and fast sections and soft and loud dynamics. Polla, who is also the bassist for the popular metal band “Stratovarius,” studied the cello as a child and has also composed film scores. The recording features the “morning” section from *Cabins & Hideouts*, which depicts a day at a summer cottage. Track 10 incorporates multi-track cello recordings, and its unpretentious, pop-infused, melodic style stands out on the album. Naxos Japan
