The Matthies father and son were master violinists who took the British music scene by storm during the Restoration period. His father, Nicola, a native of Naples, moved to London before 1671. He caused a sensation by introducing the Italian style to the British music scene, where the French style was dominant, captivating audiences with his virtuosic technique and a rich, varied tone described as “speaking like the human voice.” His son, Nicola II, inherited his father’s extraordinary technique from an early age and later moved to Vienna to serve as a court violinist for the Habsburgs. Their arrival caused British musical tastes to shift entirely toward the Italian style, leaving such a profound impact that the writer Roger North wrote, “Without the spice of Italy, one could find no flavor in the city.” Duo Dorado, formed in 1999 and acclaimed for its recordings of English Baroque violin works, performs a selection of Mattis’s compositions to recreate the impact of that era.
