This is the fourth volume in a series that sheds light on the lesser-known orchestral works left behind by Moszkowski, who is known for his virtuosic piano pieces. The symphony was composed during the summer of his 19th year as the culmination of his studies at the New Academy of Music in Berlin. Composed of four movements with a running time of 36 minutes, it is a substantial work in the German Romantic style, featuring a Schumann-like sound and musical ideas. Discovered among a collection of scores held at the National Library of Paris, this symphony has been recorded here for the first time. When compared to Bruckner’s Symphony No. 3 (First Draft) and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 3—both composed in the same year, 1873—one can sense a kinship in their sounds. “Laurin” is a ballet based on a medieval epic, but the score has been lost. Fortunately, Moszkowski himself had composed a concert suite for the work, allowing us to enjoy the lighthearted, pastoral, and vivid music created by his skillful orchestration. Naxos Japan
