This album features a collaboration between the brilliant composer and cellist Giovanni Sollima and Vanni Moretto—a double bassist, violone player, composer, and conductor—who, together with the early music ensemble Il Pomodoro to present works by the two Zappas alongside their own compositions related to them. This program has already thrilled audiences in live performances. Moretto’s “Zappa’s Revenge” is an arrangement of Frank Zappa’s works for an 18th-century ensemble—conceived as either a gesture of gratitude or retaliation for Frank Zappa’s performance of Francesco’s works on electronic instruments. Highlights include the use of gut-stringed instruments, a classical oboe, harpsichord, and—in a daring move—a natural horn in this tonally unconventional piece. (C)RS
