[From Ozawa’s two-time-only collaborations with the BRSO, the January 1990 performance is now available on CD for the first time!] Although Seiji Ozawa conducted the Berlin Philharmonic—based in northern Germany—on numerous occasions, for some reason, he performed with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (BRSO) in southern Germany only twice: in July 1983 and January 1990. Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and Piano Concerto No. 1 (piano: Martha Argerich), performed in the first half of the 1983 concert, have already been released on CD (900701), but this marks the first-ever CD release of the 1990 concert. Although a DVD of the January 18 performance was released by the Dream Life label in 2011, this release combines it with the concert from the previous day, January 17, and features new mastering. While there likely isn’t a significant difference in the fundamental quality of the performances, the new remastering brings out the richness of the string section, the colorful ensemble of the woodwinds, and the lustrous violin solo in “The Life of a Hero,” resulting in a finish that would hold its own even if marketed as a modern recording. Both Ozawa and the orchestra had thoroughly refined the program; not only is the performance flawless, but the sound of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra—which is renowned even among German orchestras for its “warmth”—adds to the appeal. In the Beethoven pieces, the orchestra rides the powerful, rhythmic movement of the lower strings, and one can almost feel it pulsing in response to Ozawa’s vibrant musical interpretation; in the Strauss pieces, each section demonstrates its inherent excellence. Whether in chamber-like ensemble passages or in sections where the entire orchestra builds to a massive climax, the unity and beauty of the sound remain unbroken—a truly remarkable achievement that offers a distinct flavor even among German orchestras, differing from that of the Berlin Philharmonic. This is undoubtedly a recording that should not be overlooked when discussing “Ozawa’s German repertoire.” Although the booklet of the import edition lists the recording venue as the Gasteig, the correct venue is the Herkules-Saal.
