Description:
[Accurately capturing the sound of historic German instruments from the same era as the work itself, this performance brings to life Bach’s magnum opus] Maurizio Croci, a early-music keyboardist from Italian-speaking Switzerland, trained at the Basel Schola Kantorum, and who maintains a global concert career alongside his professorship at the Lausanne Higher School of Music (HEMU), has finally recorded the complete *Clavier-Übung III* by Bach. While serving as choir director at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Bach self-published the *Clavier-Übung* series, thereby presenting his achievements as a master of keyboard music to the wider world. Published in 1739 following the two volumes for harpsichord, “Book 3” is a collection of pieces for the organ, an instrument on which he himself was highly regarded for his exceptional understanding and performance skills. The collection consists of 27 pieces in total: 21 solo pieces (the German Organ Mass) that utilize chorale melodies—the foundation of Lutheran church music—in various forms, along with a grand Prelude and Fugue affectionately known as “St. Anne,” and four short pieces for four-hand keyboard. Krochi chose an instrument by Christoph Troytmann, which was built around the same time as the work and embodies a design philosophy reminiscent of that of the master craftsman Schnitter. Drawing on the stop listings explicitly noted in G.F. Kaufmann’s organ collection, published in Leipzig between 1733 and 1736, he clearly distinguishes between timbres, conveying the depth inherent in each piece through an interpretation that is both lucid and majestic. Detailed information on the stop selections for each piece is provided in the booklet. The work of engineer Rainer Arndt, who has produced many exquisite organ recordings for the Ramée label, also shines through. Naxos Japan
