[“The Beautiful Mill-Girl” Revived with Recitation and Period Instruments in a 19th-Century Salon] Schubert’s “The Beautiful Mill-Girl,” performed by Georg Nigl, one of Austria’s leading baritones, and Alexander Gergelyfi, a master of historical keyboard instruments. They perform using a Tafelklavier (square piano) built around 1810. Its modest volume and warm, rich tonal palette—which differ greatly from those of a modern grand piano—eliminate the need for the singer to project his voice, enabling a “conversation through music” that transcends mere singing. By setting aside the standards that emphasize vocal projection and volume—which are often demanded of modern opera singers—and focusing instead on balance with the instrument, combined with Nigl’s singing, a vivid performance unfolds where even the singer’s breathing can be heard, as if one were invited into an intimate 19th-century salon. Furthermore, the recording includes five additional recitations of works not set to music by Schubert—including poems by Wilhelm Müller, prologues and epilogues, and the eerie and sorrowful poem “Blumlein VergiBmein” (derived from “VergiBmeinnicht”—“Forget-Me-Not”—with the “nicht” removed, effectively meaning “ "Forget Me" flower”), are included as additional recitations, bringing into sharper relief the young man’s love and heartbreak as he trains at the watermill, as well as his anguished psyche and the depths of the story. This album offers a completely new take on *The Beautiful Mill-Girl*, revising the modern trend toward massive, standardized concert formats and masterfully reviving the tradition of the “Liederspiel” (song play) that was popular in Berlin salons in the early 19th century.
