Description:
[Featuring Bostridge’s “Symphony” and Other Masterful Performances by Altschedt and Mustonen] The fifth installment of the “Rockenhaus Music Festival Edition,” with Nikolai Altschedt serving as artistic director following in the footsteps of Gidon Kremer. This album combines works by the Finnish genius Olli Mustonen and the Hungarian master Zoltán Kodály, creating a collection brimming with mystical and magical charm. The album’s title track, Mustonen’s “Light of the Sky,” is a symphony for tenor, cello, and piano inspired by the Finnish national epic *Kalevala*. Though a single-movement work, it is a monumental piece requiring a performance time of nearly 30 minutes. The mythical world in which the sun and moon are stolen by the Northern Witch is dramatically brought to life by the overwhelming vocals of Ian Bostridge—who also participated in the 2016 premiere—alongside the composer Mustonen’s own uniquely radiant piano playing and Altstedt’s cello. This work, which carries profound symbolic significance even today with its theme of “robbing the world of light,” was revised in 2020 as Symphony No. 3 for tenor solo and orchestra. The album also features Kodály’s passionate sonatas and sonatinas, which explore Hungarian folk music, as well as a virtuosic cello sonata composed by Mustonen in 2006. Please enjoy this extraordinary feast of chamber music—a fusion of folk tradition and innovation—which Altschedt has praised as featuring “voices and resonances unlike anything I’ve ever heard before.” Naxos Japan
