This album features two rare works for two pianos composed by Poulenc during his later and final years. Of particular note is the world premiere recording of Concert champêtre, originally written as a harpsichord concerto and arranged for two pianos by Poulenc himself. Another highlight is the world’s first commercial recording of the film score for Journey to America, which was lost in 1951 but has been restored and arranged by Anthony Gray from archival recordings. Revived as a complete version featuring an accordion, this score—which depicts a rural couple taking their first flight—offers the delightfully playful and colorful musical world unique to Poulenc. Furthermore, the album includes “Adieu Maison,” written for the renowned actress Yvonne Plantin, who starred in the film, as well as Departure for the Isle of Cythera, composed around the same time as the film. Also featured is Elegy, a masterpiece from his later years in which the melody is delicately passed back and forth between the two pianos.
