Formed in 2025 with the aim of presenting high-quality works for soprano and alto, The Mira Ensemble’s debut album features a collection of part-songs by Howells. It includes early songs characterized by rich harmonies and pastoral lyricism, dance-form works reflecting the influence of Holst and Tudor music, the lighthearted suite *Sea Urchins* depicting a seaside vacation, and *Bunches of Grapes* for children. Among this diverse selection, “Piping Down the Valleys Wild,” set to a poem by William Blake and born from the grief of losing his 9-year-old son, strikes a chord with its bittersweet and poignant prayer-like resonance. From one of the few part-songs written after the war to the charming carol composed on Christmas Day itself, listeners can fully savor the trajectory of his creative journey through beautiful vocals.
