"Fusions," an album performed by Russian-born pianist Nikolai Medvedev, who was born in 1986. A graduate of the prestigious Gnesin Academy of Music who performs around the world, Medvedev released this album after moving to Berlin in 2022. True to its title, it features a selection of masterpieces that blend jazz and classical music at a high level. In addition to Kapustin’s works—such as “Piano Sonata No. 2,” which weaves complex rhythms into traditional sonata form , Op. 40 Etudes—which shine with sophisticated harmonies—and “Variations for Piano,” which makes full use of diverse jazz idioms. The album also includes Gershwin’s brilliant “Three Preludes” and “Seven Virtuoso Etudes,” arranged by Earl Wild from Gershwin’s hit songs. The dynamic swing of jazz rhythms and the emotional depth that infuses virtuosic technique with passionate excitement and the soulful spirit of the blues—please enjoy Medvedev’s performance, in which these two elements are masterfully fused.
