Description:
Felix Voilsch was a composer active in the North German music scene from the late 19th to the early 20th century. He taught himself composition and worked as a conductor and organist based in Altona. While appreciating innovative modern music, he himself valued the traditions of Bach and Brahms, continuing to write tonal music in the spirit of the late Romantic era throughout his life. At the same time, he wove regional characteristics and spiritual culture into his works, and his six symphonies and oratorios earned high international acclaim. This recording features his first and last symphonies. Composed between 1907 and 1908, Symphony No. 1 maintains a classical four-movement form. Because it employs melodies reminiscent of folk songs, it is also known as the “Niederdeutsche” (Lower German) Symphony, and it concludes with a brilliant chorale in C major. The 1908 premiere was well received, and it became one of his signature works. Symphony No. 6, “Sinfonia Sacra,” written in the late 1930s, is his magnum opus dealing with religious themes. As his activities were restricted under the Nazi regime and his works gradually disappeared from concert halls, the success of the 1941 premiere brought Voelsch his final moment of glory.
