Description:

Karl Weigl was a leading composer of interwar Vienna who studied under Zemlinsky and served as Mahler’s assistant and a lecturer at the University of Vienna. In 1903, he founded the “Society of Creative Musicians” with Schoenberg and others, and was involved in the premieres of cutting-edge music, maintaining close ties with Webern and others. However, even amidst these progressive trends, Weigl himself adhered to a late-Romantic style based on tonality throughout his life, pursuing a unique musical style that carried on the “classical spirit of Vienna.” After fleeing to the United States in 1938 to escape Nazi persecution, he struggled financially while composing symphonies and string quartets. Although he faced adversity in his later years, his lyrical works have recently been rapidly reevaluated through recordings and performances. His String Quartet No. 4, composed in 1924, features a somber third movement titled “Requiem for Eva,” framed by short, satirical movements. This enigmatic structure, which at first glance seems disjointed, reflects the unstable social conditions of the time. The Sixth String Quartet, written in 1939 after his exile, centers on the second movement, “From the Deep Abyss,” which is imbued with a sense of loss, and sings of a return to tradition and rebirth. The Three Interludes of 1942 are a charming collection of short pieces that sought classical accessibility even amidst a period of hardship. Naxos Japan
