This series shines a spotlight on the Estonian composer Artur Lemba, who, despite making a name for himself as a pianist and teacher, saw his own works largely overlooked for many years. Volume 2 features a passionate and lyrical string quartet in the tradition of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff; a piano quintet that was long kept under wraps due to its historical background—having been purchased by the Estonian government during the Nazi occupation—and was finally published in 2021; and a piano quintet that fuses the brilliant, concerto-like piano with the pastoral sounds of Estonian folk songs. The performances are by the up-and-coming M4gnet String Quartet, supported by the Estonian Cultural Endowment. With a wide-ranging repertoire spanning from the classical to the modern, they have established an international reputation for their precise and passionate ensemble playing.
