Description:

[Rémy Barreau Re-records Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9 at St. Florian to Mark the 200th Anniversary of Bruckner’s Birth!] Remi Barreau received high praise when he appeared at the St. Florian Summer Music Festival’s BrucknerTage in 2011. Since then, while serving as the festival’s resident conductor, he has been recording the complete symphonies at a rate of one per year, and it is still fresh in our memory that he completed the box set in November 2023. However, this was not the end of Remi Barreau and St. Florian’s Bruckner project. With the 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth fast approaching, the BrucknerTage in August 2024 will feature Symphony No. 9. In the first half of the concert, the orchestra will perform the main draft of the fourth movement from the composer’s posthumous manuscripts, with commentary by Bruckner scholar Felix Diagarten. The second half featured performances of the first through third movements. In the program booklet, Barro writes that this experience reinforced his conviction that the Ninth is not a work that remains incomplete, but rather one that should be followed by the fourth movement. The fact that the playing time for these three movements is slightly shorter compared to the previous 2015 recording may stem from this awareness that “it does not end with the third movement.” As usual, Barrow’s tempo is on the slower side, taking into account the reverberation of St. Florian’s, yet it never sags; together with musicians well-acquainted with this acoustics, he breathes life into a profound and expansive musical experience. Unlike the concert, the CD features the first through third movements first, followed by the draft version. This is a long-playing disc with a total running time of 89 minutes and 17 seconds. While the label states there are no playback issues, depending on your equipment, it may not play all the way through. Performance Duration Recorded in 2015: 32:12 / 14:19 / 30:31 Recorded in 2024: 31:15 / 13:11 / 28:12 Naxos Japan
