[The Long-Awaited New Complete Recording of Pergolesi’s Unappreciated Masterpiece by the Genius Who Died Too Young!] Le Olimpiate, a masterpiece by Pergolesi—one of the leading composers of the 18th-century Neapolitan school—was released the year before he died of illness at the age of 26. Under the reign of Charles III, the new Bourbon king of Naples, Pergolesi was accused of spying due to his ties to the former Habsburg royal family and was ostracized from the Neapolitan music scene. sought a new path in Rome, the “Eternal City.” There, he set new music to the libretto of L’Olimpiade—which had previously been composed and staged by Vice-Maestro Caldera for the Imperial Court in Vienna—and premiered the work. However, a series of misfortunes, including the sudden death of his patron, led to the production’s failure. In recent years, riding the wave of the Baroque revival, this major work by Pergolesi has drawn the attention of experts; while a critical edition has been published and complete CD recordings featuring both modern and period instruments have been released, all are now difficult to obtain, making this new recording by Italy’s leading performers a truly long-awaited release. Centered on a story of friendship—in which Megacres, a young man skilled in all sports, competes as a stand-in in the Olympic Games to fulfill the wishes of his best friend and benefactor, Licida, who is in love with the same woman—this work originally featured male countertenors performing female roles at its premiere due to restrictions in Rome, the Pope’s seat of power. However, in this production, conversely, all the high-register parts for the male roles are sung by female vocalists. While delicately conveying the characters’ inner emotions through their singing, they vividly showcase the beauty of Pergolesi’s work, which features a succession of superb arias. The orchestral support is outstanding, featuring such virtuosos as oboist Prisca Comproy and concertmaster Marco Bianchi. The immersive experience of this live recording, which includes the full audience applause, is simply irresistible. Naxos Japan
