[Exploring Time and Memory in Music Through the Violin and Viola] American artist Christine Wu is acclaimed for her bold tone and exceptional technique in both violin and viola performances, and was awarded the Audience Prize at the 8th Sendai International Music Competition in 2022. Produced following her win of the CD Recording Award at the 1st Berlin Prize for Young Artists, this album explores the relationship between time and memory through music. The album features Bach’s “Chaconne,” in which the repetition of harmonic progressions seems to evoke memory; Tower’s “Wild Purple,” where the repetition of intervals creates a sense of dynamism; and Manford’s “Eight Musings…,” which reconstructs fragments of his own compositions. Without relying on excessive sentimentality, this is an intellectually engaging and superbly structured album that explores how the repetitions and structures used in these works shape memory.
