[Discover the Unknown Charms of a Masterpiece Through the Sounds Heard by 19th-Century Germans] Weber’s masterpiece opera *Der Freischütz*, whose 200th anniversary of the composer’s death falls in 2026, was a huge success from the moment of its premiere. In 1825, four years after the premiere, an arrangement for wind ensemble (Harmonimusik)—a popular format at the time—was published in Leipzig, making it possible to enjoy the music even in settings without an orchestra or singers. Although little is known about the arranger, Flachs, the instrumentation—a standard wind octet, to which Mozart and Beethoven also composed works, augmented by a pair of flutes—is brimming with dynamic variation and color, making for a truly rewarding listening experience. The interpretation by the period instrument ensemble “Wolf,” which performs this piece on the instruments familiar to audiences of the first half of the 19th century, captures the subtleties of both the original and the arranged version well and is full of charm that keeps the listener engaged from start to finish (The lineup features such virtuosos as Benoît Laurent on oboe and Yuko Fukumae on clarinet.) The inclusion of song arrangements—in which trumpets and double basses add effective resonance—and the “Adagio and Rondo” is also a welcome addition. The album is dedicated to Alain de Reykel, who supported many early music orchestras, primarily in Belgium, before sadly passing away in 2024. Naxos Japan
