The Splendor of French Baroque Brought to Life by Two Plucked Instruments] This album features a carefully curated selection of operas, chamber music, and solo keyboard pieces beloved in 17th- and 18th-century France, arranged for two clavecins (harpsichords) in accordance with the performance practices of the era. “When two instruments play together, the possibilities expand so much that it feels as if there were four clavichords,” says performer Olivier Fortin. Emmanuel Frankenberg, who frequently performs with Fortin—having gained years of experience as a collaborator with the virtuoso Skip Sempé before becoming the director of Ensemble Masque—agrees: “Even solo pieces that are thoroughly captivating when performed as written become even richer in a duet.” If you compare these pieces to the two performed on a single instrument (which are, in fact, extremely captivating performances), you’ll fully understand what they mean. The ensemble uses one instrument based on an old model made in 17th-century Antwerp and two instruments that are reproductions of larger models from 18th-century Parisian workshops, switching between them freely depending on the piece (all three were crafted by today’s foremost instrument makers). The flexible program structure, which does not adhere strictly to chronological order, is highly effective and makes listening to the album from start to finish a true pleasure.
