This album brings together a collection of works that can be described as “musical portraits,” featuring these four particularly important composers active in France during the first half of the 18th century, performed through various combinations of the violin, viola da gamba, and harpsichord, as well as in solo settings. In addition to pieces they published under their own names or those of others, the album also includes works by contemporary French composers such as Le Ber, Dornel, and Dajancourt that were inspired by these four figures. The performances are by Les Tambours, an ensemble comprising three virtuosos active at the forefront of the French and Belgian music scenes. Having already demonstrated their unparalleled aptitude for French Baroque works on numerous albums, they continue to offer exquisite interpretations that capture the subtleties hidden within each piece, allowing the listener to truly sense the individuality of these four composers through the musical vocabulary of the era. The liner notes, featuring beautiful illustrations, are particularly intriguing: they liken each of the four composers to an ace of a playing card, evoking the image of a formidable hand—a four-of-a-kind of aces (in French and English; the Japanese domestic edition includes a Japanese translation).
