Zygmunt Noskowski was a leading figure in the Polish music scene of the late 19th century. Known as a renowned educator who studied under Moniuszko and mentored composers such as Szymanowski, he established a unique musical language that fused the rigorous counterpoint he honed during his studies in Berlin with folk elements from his homeland. While he made his name with his representative work, the symphonic poem “The Steppe,” his symphonies and chamber music have been rapidly reevaluated in recent years. This album features three works: the “Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Viotti,” which pioneered his chamber music style; String Quartet No. 2, which combines bold modulations with Beethovenian depth; and the humorous quartet “As You Like It,” in which familiar melodies such as “Dear Augustine” appear one after another. While respecting traditional forms, his works are interwoven with uniquely Polish sensibilities and masterful technique. The Mecole String Quartet was formed in 2007. Boasting numerous awards, including second prize at the Wigmore International Competition, their 2023 recording of works by Penderecki received high international acclaim.
