Description:
Norwegian composer Sheel Frem studied church music in Oslo and Bergen before studying composition under Englund and Rautavaara at the Sibelius Academy. He then moved to the United States, where he furthered his studies at Northern Illinois University and other institutions, earning a master’s degree. He is also active internationally as a pianist and organist. From 1986 to 1987, he visited Japan on a grant from the Japan Foundation to study Japanese contemporary music, and during that time, he also studied under Akira Miyoshi at Toho Gakuen School of Music. Since returning to Norway, he has served as vice president of the Norwegian section of the ISCM and as a university lecturer. Drawing inspiration from nature and characterized by a colorful harmonic language influenced by Messiaen and Miyoshi, his works span a wide range of genres, from orchestral to chamber music. His Piano Concerto is a work that boldly emphasizes melody and rhythm in an era dominated by atonality. Drawing on his experiences in the United States and Japan, he incorporates French-style scales, fusing traditional elements with modern forms. In his Cello Concerto, he contrasts tranquility with dynamism while highlighting the solo instrument. The harmony becomes more distinctive, leading through a dramatic cadenza to a grand finale.
