To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the birth of Latvia’s national composer, Pēteris Vasks, the Latvian Radio Choir—his long-time collaborators—presents a collection of a cappella works. The Baltic states, including Latvia, have a thriving choral tradition, with numerous large-scale outdoor choral festivals that have become such an integral part of the national identity. Although Vasks considers instrumental composition his true calling, he has also produced a significant number of choral works. Spanning more than half a century of Vask’s creative career, this album features works ranging from his earliest piece in 1961 to his latest composition in 2025. It includes religious music that was banned during the Soviet era, with themes of faith, love, silence, and homeland—all imbued with compassion—breathing life into his unhurried, tonal music. The sound is modest and beautiful, seeming to radiate a delicate, pure light. The world-renowned Latvian Radio Choir, winner of the 2023 Gramophone Award, delivers an ideal performance of Vasks’ works under the baton of master conductor Sigvards Kļava, who has served as their music director since 1992. Utilizing the ultra-precise ensemble that stunned audiences during their Japan tour and the diverse expressive techniques for which they are known as a “sound laboratory,” they bring Vasks’ music to life.
