Description:

Colon took up his post as the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra’s first-ever foreign chief conductor in the 2021–22 season. He has further refined an orchestra that was already highly functional, delivering outstanding performances; combined with his creative programming, this has led to the renewal of his contract. This album pairs “The Planets,” one of the most famous works representing Colon’s native Britain, with a piece by the lesser-known Finnish composer Vaino Raitio. Veino Raitio is considered a pioneer of Finnish modernism alongside Arle Merikanto and others. He introduced music influenced by Scriabin and Impressionism to the Finnish music scene, which was then heavily dominated by nationalism. Many of his works, such as symphonic poems, feature a free and fantastical style; “Moonlight on Jupiter” is also titled “Fantasiapoetica.” The running time on this recording is 13 minutes. While there is a recording of this piece conducted by Berglund with the Helsinki Philharmonic (released in 1978), this marks the first new recording in half a century. The performance of “The Planets” features a perfect match between Colón’s stylish conducting and the orchestra’s technical proficiency. The orchestra’s slightly darker tone is not at all out of place for evoking the image of outer space. The recording was supervised, mixed, and mastered by veteran Enno Maemets. The sound design, which conveys the orchestra’s sense of scale and energy without loss, is well-suited to the work. Naxos Japan
