Following the highly acclaimed “Roman Trilogy,” Trevino and the RAI National Symphony Orchestra present the long-awaited second installment: Respighi’s “Symphony Dramatica,” a work rarely performed or recorded. Composed of three movements and lasting approximately one hour, this work features a large orchestra—including three wind sections and an organ—and incorporates the essence of late Romanticism, such as Franck-style cyclic form and orchestration reminiscent of Richard Strauss. It reveals the ambition of Respighi, then in his mid-thirties, as he took on the symphonic genre for the first time in Italy, the “land of song.” Perhaps influenced by the outbreak of World War I between the start of composition and its completion, the first movement is energetic yet marked by a somber mood. The second movement, while singing out its melodies with lingering passion, is also haunted by a sense of shadow, and the third movement, marked “Impetuoso” (Fiercely), features combative music that concludes without a bright resolution. Whether due to the large scale of the orchestration or its tragic tone, opportunities to hear this work are rare even in his homeland. However, it features motifs reminiscent of antiquity and displays the orchestral ingenuity that would later be refined in his Roman Trilogy, making it a treat for Respighi fans and lovers of late Romantic music. Above all, under the baton of Trevino—who is enamored with this piece, calling it “one of Respighi’s finest masterpieces”—the RAI National Symphony Orchestra delivers a performance of the utmost intensity.
