TOCCATA, which has made it its mission to produce the first recordings of outstanding works, has begun recording Hugo Kauder’s chamber music. Kauder was born in Moravia, studied in Vienna, and performed as a violinist with the Tonkünstler Orchestra under the baton of Franz Schalk, Arthur Nikisch, and Ferdinand Löwe. In addition to performing with string quartets and teaching, he was also actively engaged in composition. Having studied the music of the 15th- and 16th-century Flemish school, many of Kauder’s works were grounded in traditional harmony and counterpoint, and he appears to have enjoyed a certain degree of support in Vienna. However, with the rise of the Nazis, he left Austria in 1938, moved to New York via the Netherlands in 1940, and spent the rest of his life there. Scholar Karin Wagner cites “the influence of Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler” as a characteristic of Kauder’s works. The four sonatas included here date from his Vienna period (though some were later revised in the United States). They skillfully combine fiery, passionate expression with a calm emotional depth, and in the Sonata in A minor, phrases reminiscent of Brahms’s violin sonatas occasionally emerge.
