Ronald Stevenson is a virtuoso pianist and composer who follows in the footsteps of Rachmaninoff and Liszt, and who has Celtic heritage. He deeply resonates with Grieg and Grainger’s love of folk music and has carried on that spirit through his piano arrangements. Following the seventh volume, this album also centers on arrangements of Granger’s works. In “March of the North,” he weaves in the Scotch snap (a characteristic Scottish rhythmic pattern), adding Celtic elements to the piece. The album also includes arrangements of works by the Granger couple, as well as Stevenson’s own original compositions. Furthermore, in his arrangement of “The Prisoner of the Mountain,” a song by his beloved Grieg, he fuses Nordic folk music with virtuosic technique, pursuing the artistic elevation of folk music. Track 13, “Gardineriana Rhapsody”—a world premiere recording—is based on an unfinished draft left by Grainger, featuring a theme by his close friend Balfour Gardiner, which Stevenson adapted into a concert piano piece. It progresses from a country dance-style melody through a development showcasing overwhelming virtuosity, culminating in a grand finale.
