Description:
The third volume of the “Elgar from the Archive” series, which commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Elgar Society of Great Britain (founded in 1951) by reissuing historic recordings, features two live recordings conducted by the master conductor Boldt. "The Kingdom of God" is an oratorio centered on the theme of Pentecost from the New Testament; the recording presented here is a live performance from a concert commemorating the 100th anniversary of Elgar’s birth. Under Bolt’s baton, the performance features singers who were leading figures in the British music scene at the time, as well as the Croydon Philharmonic Society, a choir that Elgar himself highly regarded and conducted. Bolt remarked that this choir “inherits the correct style and tradition directly from Elgar and possesses the power to convey the core of the music,” and regarding the founding conductor, Alan J. Kirby, he stated, “When it comes to Elgar’s music, his word is final.” All four soloists deliver superb performances, conveying the passion they poured into this special concert. It is also striking that there is a brief pause before the applause begins after the final note fades away softly. Although the recording is in mono, the signal-to-noise ratio is good, and each soloist is appropriately highlighted. The “Enigma Variations” are from a 1940 live performance, with the Concertgebouw Orchestra taking the spotlight. According to the booklet, Mengelberg actively performed this work, having given nearly 30 performances by 1940. Bolt’s interpretation is almost identical to his 1970 London Symphony Orchestra recording (EMI/Warner), which became his final official recording, suggesting that he had already reached a state of artistic maturity by this point. The soloistic phrases of the wind section, imbued with conviction and empathy, convey that the orchestra had truly made this piece their own, and the recording concludes with thunderous applause and cheers. Recordings of Boldt and the Concertgebouw Orchestra are limited to Mahler’s Lückert Lieder on Testament. Similarly, there are few recordings of the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s “Enigma Variations” beyond the 1977 version conducted by Marinari, making this CD release all the more valuable. Naxos Japan
