Description:
Graupner, a contemporary of Bach, was highly regarded during his lifetime as an opera composer and keyboard player. When Kuhnau, who served as cantor at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, died in 1722, the Leipzig City Council first nominated Telemann and then Graupner as his successors, a fact that attests to his popularity and reputation (J.S. Bach, who was the third candidate, ultimately took the position). As was customary for composers of the time, he was prolific across many genres, and it is said that the works that have survived to this day number around 2,000. This album focuses primarily on Graupner’s large-scale instrumental works. Reflecting the tastes of the German courts of the time, the collection includes a mix of Italian-style concertos with their characteristic alternation of fast and slow movements, French-style orchestral suites featuring a series of dance pieces, and works combining these styles, revealing Graupner’s ingenuity in crafting fresh music for discerning monarchs. Based on a string ensemble with basso continuo, most works feature one to three pairs of wind instruments (trumpets, horns, and flutes) performing solo parts, which likely indicates that the Darmstadt court orchestra, where Graupner served, included these outstanding musicians. Another notable feature is the prominent use of timpani. Depending on the piece, the score calls for as many as four or six timpani, adding a magnificent and festive atmosphere. The conductor of this album, Heyerick, has recorded seven albums of vocal works, including cantatas, for cpo, demonstrating his enthusiastic commitment to this composer. In addition to his mastery of Italian and French styles, the virtuosity of the wind instruments, showcased throughout, is a highlight of the recording. Naxos Japan
