The complete works for standard piano by Ivan Vyshnegoratsky, the pioneer of microtonal music] Ivan Vyshnegorsky is recognized as one of the pioneers of microtonal music, and his works are performed worldwide. Although he devoted significant effort to the development of the quarter-tone piano, he continued to compose for the solo piano—the instrument he particularly loved throughout his life. This album contains his complete works for the so-called “standard” piano. From the “Etudes on a Magic Square of Sounds,” written in 1957 during his mature period and highly praised by Messiaen, to the “Preludes of Youth,” written in 1916 before he went into exile and settled in Paris, the majority of the works included here were discovered in the composer’s archive held by the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel and are being released for the first time. The early works were reconstructed in 1949 based on memory, and it is said that part of the set of 24 preludes was forgotten and could not be reconstructed. The performer, Martine Jost, was a close friend of the composer during his lifetime and one of the founders of the Ivan Vyshnevsky Society; the composer held her dynamic yet delicate interpretation in high regard.
