[Handel’s Fresh Sensibility in His Youth: A Brilliant Performance by Marie Rys] This album features three solo cantatas composed by Handel in his youth for Rome’s high society, along with one similar work in the Italian style composed during his rise to prominence in London. Soprano Marie Rys, who delivers a brilliant vocal performance, has been steadily garnering high acclaim since 2022, when she brilliantly stepped in as a last-minute replacement for Cecilia Bartoli in the title role of Handel’s opera *Alcina* at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Following her successive appearances in recordings for Les Taranes Lyriques at the Châteaux de Versailles Spectacles and her solo debut album (Glossa) featuring masterful arias by Handel and his contemporaries, this solo recording is a perfect match for the repertoire. Her skill in delivering the rich drama of the orchestral accompaniment with a voice of exceptional suppleness and nuanced expression is truly a delight to hear. Led by the violin (Fiona Poupard) and oboe (Mihaela Flavancova), whose solo passages are as dazzling as those in a concerto, the ensemble performance with the elite period instrument players gathered at the Palace of Versailles is magnificent, characterized by both spontaneity and strong cohesion. The active participation of the continuo section, with the theorbo (Lea Mason) joining in at various points, is also thoroughly reassuring. Even in Handel’s only French cantata—believed to have been performed at the home of the Marquis de Rospoli in Rome—the delicate interpretation shines through.
