This album combines instruments that graced different eras, blending the music of Astor Piazzolla—who pioneered new frontiers in the world of tango with the bandoneon—with works by the important predecessors who inspired him. The viola da gamba ensemble is La Chérone, a highly accomplished group known for producing the complete works of the legendary virtuoso Maran Maré on the Ricercar label. The delicate yet expansive performance delivered by this ensemble—which has recorded many acclaimed albums—alongside the versatile French bandoneonist Jean-Baptiste Henri goes beyond merely exploring new forms of expression within the tango genre; it is imbued with a depth that strongly evokes the lineage of modern French music represented by Piazzolla’s mentor Nadia Boulanger and her sister Lili.
