Description:
[A Master Swordsman and Musician: The Artistry of a Classical-Era Prodigy of African Descent, Performed on Period Instruments] Saint-Georges, a Frenchman born in the colonies, was a prodigy of the Classical era who excelled in fencing and the violin and left his mark as a composer. A two-disc album featuring a selection of his major works across a wide range of genres, performed with exceptional skill on period instruments, is now available from Châteaudeversailles Spectacles, a label based at the Palace of Versailles. Born in the French West Indies in the Caribbean, Saint-Georges first attracted attention in France by demonstrating his extraordinary skill in fencing. He later distinguished himself through his musical studies and even became the conductor of the regular “Concertes Spirituels.” His music is a collection of masterpieces characterized by the elegance and crisp clarity unique to the Classical era. In addition to works from genres that have been relatively well-recorded, such as concertos and chamber music, this collection also includes a wealth of operas and symphonies for which only fragmentary scores remain. The result is a collection that leaves one in awe of the multifaceted talents of Saint-Georges, who captivated the people of Paris around the time of Mozart’s arrival in France but saw his career stymied by prejudice regarding his origins. Particularly in operas such as *L’Amante Anonima* and *Ernestine*, the thrilling use of musical texture—seemingly anticipating Romantic rescue operas—is not to be missed. The collection also includes works by the renowned Italian virtuoso Rollí, who taught Saint-Georges during his stay in Paris. Langlois de Svalde, a rising star of the new generation and a member of Le Consort, leads the ensemble here as an outstanding soloist and conductor. It is a series of masterful performances that fully convey the charm of these works with the subtlety unique to period instrument performance. Naxos Japan
