The GrandPiano label’s “Complete Piano Works of Palmgren” project, launched in 2021 as the first of its kind, was originally planned to conclude in eight volumes. However, due to the discovery of new works and other factors, it has now expanded to a ninth volume, with nearly all of the tracks being world premiere recordings. This collection includes the “Three Humoresques,” dedicated to his mentor Busoni, which stand out for their technical virtuosity and refined waltz rhythms; the early masterpiece “Fantasy,” which carries on the tradition of Liszt and Chopin; the Chopin-esque “Scherzo,” written when he was 15; the “Intermezzo Valsant,” which maintains a bright tone despite being composed during the civil war; and the suite “Sound and Rhythm,” which centers on the joy of the Nordic Midsummer Festival—the album is packed with highlights. The closing suite, “Nordic Summer,” interweaves Finnish folk songs, Impressionist techniques, and dramatic ballads in the style of Liszt. It unfolds a world unique to Palmgren, the “Finnish Poet of the Piano,” who excelled at the Impressionist sense of light and shadow. Naxos Japan
