A collection of works by the Swedish contemporary composer Anders Hillborg. Building on a meticulous technique influenced by Ligeti, Hillborg has established a unique style that translates the shifting hues of the natural world into sound. The tension created by explosive sounds reminiscent of volcanic eruptions and the subtle tremors of sound. Or rhythms that overlap like waves, and powerful chords that seem to fill the space. These extreme sonic expressions draw the listener in, while the dramatic resonance of diatonic chords creates an immersive experience reminiscent of a contemporary art installation (spatial experience). BIS has launched a project to systematically record his orchestral and concerto works. The first release in this series, conducted by Christian Karlsen—whose recording of Ustvolskaya’s complete symphonies (BIS2304) was highly acclaimed—features the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. It includes Piano Concerto No. 1, in which Tamara Stefanovich displays her overwhelming technique, and the Cello Concerto, in which the dedicatee, Nikolai Altstedt, highlights an intimate and concise expression. It also includes the meditative “Kongsgaard Variations,” based on the melody of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 32, and “Vaporised Tivoli,” which depicts the clamour and silence of an amusement park.
