Mel Bonis (born Melanie Bonis), a female composer of modern France, left behind a legacy of outstanding works—primarily piano pieces and chamber music—despite being caught up in a feudal, male-dominated society and a turbulent personal life. This album focuses on her orchestral works, which have been undergoing a revival of interest in recent years. Bonis’s music is characterized by beautiful melodies, chromatic harmonies, and delicate phrasing, adding an original brilliance to the Impressionist repertoire. In particular, “Cleopatra’s Dream,” included in “Three Legendary Women,” a work distinguished by its modern sensibility, is garnering significant attention: it will receive its Japanese premiere on February 8, 2026, performed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Ben Glassberg), and will also be featured in a concert by the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra in March. The program also includes the exotic “Oriental Suite,” “Three Dances for Orchestra”—a modern reinterpretation of Baroque dance pieces—and the unique “Cat on the Roof,” which depicts a cat at night. The conductor is Joseph Bastian, who has served as Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Munich Symphony Orchestra since 2023. Known for his precise and dignified musical interpretations, he also serves as Principal Conductor of the Orchestre de Bourgogne in Dijon and the Asia Youth Orchestra. In 2016, he garnered international attention when he stepped in at short notice to conduct the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and he has been awarded the Neeme Järvi Prize and the Eugen Jochum Prize.
