[A Beautiful Yet Complex Portrait of Contemporary America, Woven from the Melodies of 76 Composers] Conceived by Korean-American pianist Min Kwon, this album is an unprecedented five-CD collection featuring new piano compositions written by 76 contemporary American composers, all inspired by the patriotic anthem “America the Beautiful.” It recreates the spirit of Anton Diabelli’s “Diabelli Variations”—in which he commissioned famous composers of the 19th century to write variations—within a contemporary American context. With 76 composers contributing a total of 82 tracks, the breakdown of the six tracks with the most contributions is as follows: two versions of the original “America the Beautiful,” one anonymous piece, and three composers who each contributed two tracks—all of which are world premiere recordings (or world premiere arrangements, where applicable). In 2020, amid the pandemic, Kwon struggled with her role as an artist while watching over her husband, a doctor working on the front lines. launched this project with the fundamental question: “What is America? Is it a beautiful country to begin with? Was it ever? Or could it become one in the future?” Composers of diverse ages, genders, races, and cultural backgrounds—including Pulitzer and Grammy Prize winners—responded to this call, expressing through music the anguish and despair of our increasingly complex and divided modern society, as well as hope for the future. The participating composers span a wide range, from the veteran Samuel Adler to those born in the year 2000, and include such names as Richard Danilopoul, Terry Riley, John Harbison, Kristjan Järvi, Nico Muhly, Stewart Copeland (The Police), and Miya Masaoka. While many composers feel reluctant to express the beauty of America given the current state of affairs, the project was driven by the belief that “reflection, criticism, and an indomitable spirit of improvement” are the very essence of America’s beauty. Guided by the Latin motto of the United States, “E pluribus unum” (Out of many, one), the diverse variations born from a single melody can be described as a grand tapestry of sound that reflects the ever-changing face of America. Released to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States of America in July 2026, this monumental work embodies a belief in the power of music and hope, even amidst difficult realities.
