[The Little-Known World of Baroque Keyboard Music, Performed on 17th-Century Belgian Masterpieces] Bernard Focleur, a world-renowned organist based in Belgium—a country with a rich tradition in both early and contemporary music—is also an active composer. He has enjoyed a prolific career and served as artistic director of the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. His latest solo recording for Ricercar features three historic masterpieces crafted in the 17th century by organ builders from the Spanish Netherlands (present-day Belgium). The program explores the world of keyboard music that flourished in the Netherlands during that era, focusing on works from the late Renaissance through the early Baroque period. Restored to their 17th-century condition between 1992 and 2022, these organs demonstrate the excellence of Netherlandish craftsmanship—a tradition also highly regarded in fashion, crafts, and painting. It is a true delight to experience the beauty of their sound and the magic of their reverberation through the masterful performance captured by label founder J. Lejeune’s meticulous engineering. While the painter Rubens was acclaimed throughout Europe, and Frescobaldi flourished in Italy and Sweelinck in the Netherlands, the works of Bull and Phillips—who had come from England in search of a safe religious life—as well as lesser-known pieces by the Brussels composer Cornet and Kerkhoeven, who lived into the next century, also resonate charmingly through Focloure’s meticulous yet expansive touch.
